What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I got this bit of advice from a former boss, after he had moved to a different role and had become bitter from being overlooked for key roles. It has stuck with me, even though I haven’t followed it diligently. I am a natural hard worker and don’t always promote myself. Nevertheless, his words hold true in the corporate world. The foolish work hard, the smart succeed.
